Make a 300×600 half page ad
A large sidebar unit with twice the height of a medium rectangle. It commands attention, holds real imagery, and consistently posts strong viewability numbers.
The specification
| Dimensions | 300 × 600 pixels |
|---|---|
| Aspect ratio | 0.5:1 |
| Common name | Half Page |
| Category | Display advertising |
| Where it runs | Sidebars on desktop, usually in premium placements. Publishers charge more for it because it is hard to miss. |
| Export formats | HTML5 banner package for ad servers, animated GIF for display networks, or static PNG and JPG. |
Designing for this shape
Treat it like a poster, not a banner
You have room for a proper image, a headline, supporting copy and a call to action. This is the display unit that rewards art direction.
Same width as 300x250
That shared width makes it the easiest pairing in a set. A design built for one usually fits the other with minimal reworking.
Give the CTA its own space
With 600 pixels of height there is no excuse for cramming the button against the copy. Let it sit clear at the bottom.
Frames and timing
Three to four frames. The extra height means you can carry an image through the whole sequence and change only the copy, which keeps the file weight down.
File weight
The Google Display Network sets a maximum of 150 KB per creative, applied to both image and HTML5 units. Many networks also cap animation length, commonly at 30 seconds, and require the loop to stop after a small number of repeats.
Every network and placement enforces its own specification, and those change. Confirm the current maximum file size, animation length and format support for the platform you are running on before you publish.
Sizes that pair with it
A campaign is rarely one size. These are the units most often bought alongside 300×600, and one design can be fitted across the whole set with shared margins and synced headlines.

Questions
Why is 300x600 called a half page?
It occupies roughly half the vertical space of a typical page column, which is where the name comes from.
Is 300x600 better than 300x250?
It gets more attention and better viewability, but less inventory. Most campaigns run both, since they share a width and adapt easily between each other.
Can I reuse my 300x250 design at 300x600?
Yes, and it is the easiest adaptation in display because the width matches. You are adding height, not reflowing the layout.
