Make a 1080×1080 square post ad

The standard square for social feeds. It takes up more vertical space in a scrolling feed than a landscape image, which is why it remains the default choice for feed advertising.

The specification

Dimensions1080 × 1080 pixels
Aspect ratio1.0:1
Common nameSquare Post
CategorySocial
Where it runsInstagram and Facebook feeds, and anywhere a 1:1 crop is expected. Feeds render it much smaller than its native size, so design for the thumbnail.
Export formatsMP4 for anything animated, since social placements are video-native, or static PNG and JPG.

Designing for this shape

Design for a phone, not your monitor

It is 1080 pixels wide in the file and perhaps 400 on a phone. Set type far larger than feels necessary and check it at a quarter size.

Leave a real margin

Feeds crop and mask edges in ways that change over time. Keep everything meaningful well inside the frame.

Contrast carries the feed

The ad competes with photographs from friends. Flat colour and strong type stand out more than another photograph does.

Frames and timing

Feeds autoplay muted, so the ad has to work with no sound and often with no tap. Three frames with generous holds gives a scrolling viewer time to read each one.

The trap: Exporting a display banner at 1080x1080. Social creative is a different register: less like an advertisement, more like a post.

File weight

Social platforms are far more generous on file weight than display networks, but they compress what you upload. Export at the full pixel dimensions and let the platform do the resizing rather than uploading something already reduced.

Every network and placement enforces its own specification, and those change. Confirm the current maximum file size, animation length and format support for the platform you are running on before you publish.

Sizes that pair with it

A campaign is rarely one size. These are the units most often bought alongside 1080×1080, and one design can be fitted across the whole set with shared margins and synced headlines.

Questions

What format should I export a 1080x1080 social ad in?

MP4 for animated feed posts, since feeds handle video natively. PNG or JPG for a static post.

Is 1080x1080 the right size for Instagram?

It is the standard square. Instagram also accepts 4:5 portrait, which occupies more feed height, and 9:16 for stories and reels.

How long should a square feed ad run?

Short. Feeds are scrolled fast, so a loop of a few seconds that reads clearly beats a longer sequence that gets scrolled past.
